HOMER, WINSLOW. (1836-1910). One of America’s greatest painters, known for his Civil War illustrations and his nature and maritime paintings. ADS. (“Winslow Homer”). 1p. Oblong 8vo. Scarboro, November 4, 1898. To art collector Thomas B. Clarke (1848-1931).
Received Scarboro ME Nov. 4, 1898 From Mr. Thos. B. Clarke Eight Hundred dollars in full payment of all demands to date.
Trained as a draftsman and printmaker, Homer gained notoriety when he covered the Civil War for Harper’s Weekly. As an avid student of art, he developed into a master painter in watercolors and oils. By the 1870s he had become famous for such works as Prisoners at the Front and The Carnival. From 1884 until his death in 1910, Homer worked in a converted carriage house studio in Scarboro, Maine, from whence he penned our brief document. Clarke, who began acquiring art in 1872, was a prominent and influential collector of the period. He and Homer were frequent correspondents with Clarke buying, critiquing and arranging for sale many of Homer’s paintings. Several tiny pinholes at the edges do not affect the text. Lightly folded and in very good condition. Uncommon.
