New Year’s wishes from “Ike E.

EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. (1890-1969). American soldier and thirty-fourth president of the United States. TLS. (“Ike E.”). 2/3p. Small 4to. Gettysburg, December 31, 1965. To Harry M. Anholt, manager of Denver’s Brown Palace Hotel, and his wife. On his personal gold-embossed DDE stationery.

Your generous Christmas remembrance arrived today and the steaks look wonderful. We are looking forward to sampling them. We had a wonderful Christmas with John and his family here to make things gay. Our hope is that your holiday was as happy as ours. We are planning to leave for our California vacation shortly after the first of the year, and will be glad for the sunshine and warmth we will hopefully find there. Mamie joins me in sincere thanks and our warm good wishes to you both for a happy and healthy New Year…

After serving two terms as president during the tense years of the Cold War, Eisenhower retired in 1961 to his home at the Allen Redding farm bordering the Gettysburg National Military Park. The year he penned our letter was a mixed one for the former president. In October he had celebrated his 75th birthday and published the first volume of his presidential memoirs, Mandate for Change. However, on the 9th and 10th of November he suffered two heart attacks. Six years earlier, during his first term in office, Eisenhower had had a severe heart attack that required a seven weeks hospital stay. Our letter, written not long after his recovery at Washington’s Walter Reed Medical Center, mentions his son John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower (b. 1922) and his family. John followed in his father’s footsteps, attending West Point and serving on General Omar Bradley’s staff; in 1968 John’s son, David, married President Nixon’s daughter Julie. The following year Nixon appointed John ambassador to Belgium. A friendly letter signed with an unusual form of his signature and including the original envelope bearing a printed free frank. Folded and in fine condition.
