Payment for Revolutionary War “repairs to arms”
ELLSWORTH, OLIVER. (1745-1807). American politician and jurist. ADS. (“O. Ellsworth”). 1p. Large oblong 8vo. Hartford, September 27, 1776. Order on John Lawrence, Treasurer of Connecticut.
Please to pay Mr. Jno. Leffingwell, by the hand of Mr. Azariah Lathrop, eleven pounds nineteen shillings & eleven pence for repairs to arms belonging to their state…& payment ordered by Governor & council of safety & charge the state.
As delegate to the Continental Congress, Constitutional Convention, and U.S. Senator from Connecticut, Ellsworth chaired the committee that drew up the Judiciary Act organizing the federal court system, and submitted rules and amendments to the Senate that became the U.S. Bill of Rights. From 1796-1800 he served as chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. Our document was signed while Ellsworth was a member of the state general assembly during the historic year of American independence, 1776. Light folding and in very fine condition.
