HEIFETZ, JASCHA. (1901-1987). Russian-born, American violinist. SP. (“Jascha Heifetz”). 1p. Large 8vo. N.p. 1925. A stunning sepia photograph of a young Heifetz in a pin striped suit, gazing intently to his right. Blind embossed by the photographer Lipnitzki of Paris. Heifetz began musical lessons at three and was performing outside his native Russia by eleven. On October 27, 1917, having fled the Russian Revolution by way of Serbia, he made his memorable American debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the event that gave birth to a famous anecdote in musical history. Violinist Mischa Elman was in the audience and during the intermission in Heifetz’s debut, he turned to his friend, pianist Leopold Godowsky, and complained “Hot in here, isn’t it,” to which Godowsky responded, “Not for a pianist!’ In 1925, the year of our photograph, Heifetz became a naturalized U.S. citizen. An attractive image boldly signed with a dark four-inch long signature. Slight silvering and minor wear at the lower corners, otherwise very fine.
