Nixon in Moscow for SALT

[NIXON, RICHARD M.] (1913-1994). Thirty-seventh president of the United States. A printed certificate for participation in the presidential visit to the U.S.S.R. for “The Moscow Summit,” which included trips to Austria, Iran, and Poland. Printed in black and red against a blue silhouette of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow’s Red Square. 1p. Oblong folio. N.p, May 20-June 1, 1972. To Hearst newspaper columnist and broadcast journalist Bob Considine (1907-1975). In February 1972, Nixon embarked on an historic trip to the People’s Republic of China, becoming the first U.S. president to do so, and meeting with government leaders including Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou En-lai in the hopes of normalizing diplomatic relations. Several months later, he accomplished a similar diplomatic feat when he traveled to the U.S.S.R. and met with Leonid Brezhnev, general secretary of the Communist Party, and other Soviet leaders. More than a mere goodwill mission, Nixon’s trip resulted in the signing of the Anti-Ballistic-Missile Treaty of 1972, which restricted the number of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) each nation could manufacture and stockpile. The treaty was part of the Strategic Arms Limitations Talks, commonly referred to as SALT. Improved relations with both China and the U.S.S.R. are considered the top diplomatic accomplishments of Nixon’s presidency. Embossed with the gold presidential seal. Nominal wear and in very fine condition. Rare!
