[MITCHELL, MARGARET.] The illustrated Motion Picture Edition of Gone With the Wind published by The Macmillan Company. 391pp., Small 4to. New York, December 1939. The volume includes a list of the film’s actors, including Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, and crew. Mitchell’s epic story of the American Civil War and Reconstruction sold one million copies in its first six months after publication in 1936, at the time, the biggest selling novel in the history of U.S. publishing. By the time of her death, in 1949, sales of Gone with the Wind had reached 8,000,000. Shortly after the book’s release, Hollywood producer David O. Selznick bought the film rights, paying the record sum of $50,000. Casting the female lead was a lengthy process and involved many screen tests for such stars as Katharine Hepburn, Carole Lombard, Paulette Goddard, Barbara Stanwyck, Lana Turner, Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford; English actress Vivian Leigh was finally chosen to star opposite Clark Gable. Gone With the Wind premieredin Atlanta December 15, 1939, with Mitchell in the audience. It enjoyed extraordinary success, winning eight Oscars. The cover is soiled and loose from the spine at the top and bottom. Corners are bumped. Several pages are torn and ten pages have parts of the text missing. The half title page is reinforced along the gutter with tape. The ownership signature of Mrs. T. J. Busey, a friend of Margaret Mitchell is on the front and back flyleaves. In fair condition only.
