BARRIE, J.M. (1860-1937) Scottish novelist best remembered for Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. CS. (“Yours Truly J. M. Barrie”). 1p. 32mo. N.p., N.d.

Barrie, born into a large family, was much affected by the death of his older brother and his mother’s ensuing grief when he was only six years old. The notion of her deceased son always remaining young in her memory comforted Barrie’s mother and took root in his imagination. Raised on the works of Daniel Defoe and Sir Walter Scott, Barrie decided to pursue a literary career, penning a number of stage works and amassing a large group of influential literary friends, including Arthur Conan Doyle, A.A. Milne, P.G. Wodehouse, H.G. Wells, and Rudyard Kipling. In 1904, his play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Updebuted in London and a novel of the same name appeared in 1911. Both were based on stories he told the orphaned sons of his deceased friend Sylvia Llewelyn Davies of whom Barrie was a guardian and one of whom was named Peter. Barrie had a number of additional successes but Peter Pan remains his most lasting legacy.

Signature is near fine.
