During the American Civil War, many Confederate soldiers employed black “body servants,” comprised both of slaves and free blacks who voluntarily took on the role for wages. “Body servants were attached to the great or would-be great men of the war. They were usually black males between the ages of sixteen to sixty who accompanied Confederate soldiers or officers, typically their masters or masters’ sons, to the war. The higher the military rank of an owner, the more status the servant had in relation to other blacks in the camp… They were the butt of numerous anecdotes, songs, stories, and jokes but were welcomed at Confederate reunions as living links with a lost past. A few were awarded state pensions,” (Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia, Jordan). In order to identify these non-military body servants, “the Confederate government issued standardized passes for body servants, and these printed forms not only included a description of the slave but instructed military officials to give them free passage,” (ibid.). Ours is one such example.
