HYDE, DOUGLAS ROSS (Pseudonym: AN CRAOIBHÍN AOIBHINN). (1860-1949). Irish scholar, linguist, author and politician; a leading member of the Gaelic Revival and the first president of Ireland. ALS. (“An Craoibhín (Douglas Hyde)”). 2pp. 8vo. Ratra, March 3, 1905. On his personal “Ratra” stationery. To CORNELIUS WEYGANDT (1871-1957), an influential University of Pennsylvania professor of literature and writer on American culture.

I have now had time to look pretty widely but by no means exhaustively through your Library of Irish Literature and I have come to the conclusion that it is far ahead of any of its predecessors, and the best of its kind ever made. I hope it may be very successful.

Le mear cuor

(Douglas Hyde)”

An academic and founder of the Gaelic League, Hyde was one of the leading forces in the Irish Literary Revival. Adopting the penname “An Craoibhín Aoibhinn,” which is Gaelic for “The Pleasant Little Branch,” he authored more than a hundred poems in the Irish language, which he spent his career legitimizing. Hyde was the author of Casadh an tSugáin, orTwisting of the Rope, based on an Irish folktale (that had also inspired Yeats) and performed in 1901 by the Irish Literary Theatre, the first play to be performed in Irish. Hyde later entered politics and in 1938 became Ireland’s president during the government of Éamon de Valera, continuing in office throughout World War II, until June 1945.

Weygandt was a professor of English literature at the University of Pennsylvania from 1897 to 1952 with a special interest in poetry especially that of the Celtic Revival, penning several works on the subject and maintaining a correspondence with some of the leading members of that literary movement. Our letter possibly refers to Weygandt’s article entitled “The Irish Literary Revival” published in the October 1904 edition of The Sewanee Review.

Written on the first and fourth pages of a folded piece of stationery. Folded into thirds and in very good condition. Rare!
