NIRENBERG, MARSHALL. (1927-2010). Nobel Prize-winning biochemist and geneticist. Signed book. (“Marshall Nirenberg, Aug. 1973, Bethesda”). 743pp. 8vo. Bethesda, August, 1973. Nirenberg’s copy of The Molecular Biology of Tumor Viruses, edited by John Tooze,with his marginal notes on six pages and underlining throughout.

 

After earning his PhD, Nirenberg was the American Cancer Society fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) before becoming a research biochemist there studying DNA, RNA and protein. His groundbreaking work in the early 1960s greatly influenced the scientific community, and he shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with two others “for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis.” NIH director DeWitt Stetten, Jr. lauded Nirenberg’s pursuit of the prize, assisted by NIH staff, as the “NIH’s finest hour.”
