TWAIN, MARK (SAMUEL CLEMENS). (1835-1910). American humorist and writer; author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and other 19th-century American classics. Signed card. (“S.L. Clemens, Mark Twain”). 1p. 32mo. N.p., N.d.

 

After working aboard steamships and as a miner, Clemens entered the world of journalism and began using the nom de plume Mark Twain. He earned national recognition in 1865 with the publication of his story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in the New York Saturday Press. One of America’s greatest writers, his subsequent works include Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi,The Innocents Abroad, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
