GULBRANSSON, OLAF. (1873-1958). Norwegian caricaturist and portraitist. Signed drawing. (“Olaf und Grete Gulbransson”). 1p. 8vo. (Stuttgart, January 10, 1910). Drawing of a potted shrub bearing 9 red hearts inscribed in German “Warmest congratulations from…” To German-born, Swiss textile entrepreneur RUDOLF VOLLMOELLER (1874-1941) and Adele Fremery (1884-1964) on the occasion of their wedding.

Born in Christiana (Oslo) to Swedish parents, Gulbransson attended Norway’s Royal Arts and Crafts School before beginning his career as a political cartoonist. In 1902, he moved to Munich to work for the enormously successful and groundbreaking satirical magazine Simplicissimus, where he met his second wife, Austrian writer Margarethe“Grete” Jehly (1882-1934). The pair divorced in 1923.

Although he is perhaps best known for the cartoons he published in Simplicissimus, Gulbranssonwas also a member of the Berlin Secession movement, a prolific book designer, and professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Although an exhibition held at the Berlin Academy for his 60th birthday was censored by the Nazis, he was later criticized by his former colleagues for drawing negative caricatures of Allied figures during the Nazi occupation of Norway.

Vollmoeller was head of eponymous textile businesses in Germany and Switzerland. He had two children with Fremery one of whom was the prominent Zurich art dealer Heidi Vollmoeller.

An unidentified hand has written in pencil on the back of the frame, “Zur Hochzeit von Adele Fremery v. Rudolf Vollmoeller / Stuttgart 10.1.1910” and another has added a blue ink inscription to Swiss bookdealer “Werner Skorianetz … 1959 von seiner Oma [from his grandmother] in Zurich / 15 August 1959.”

Our charming drawing is rendered in Gulbransson’s characteristic whimsical style with clear lines, striking colors and text written in capital letters. In very good condition. Contained in a custom frame, and not examined out of the frame. A lovely Valentine’s Day or Anniversary gift!
