“Thank you for your nice letter about Owen Wingrave. I am so glad you enjoyed the television performance of this work, and also the recording recently broadcast. I hope you will see it when it eventually gets on to the stage in about two years’ time.”
 
Commissioned for broadcast by the BBC, Owen Wingrave aired on May 16, 1971; as Britten here suggests, its stage premiere took place at Covent Garden just two years later, on May 10, 1973. Boldly signed and in fine condition.
