GIGLI, BENIAMINO. (1890-1957). Italian tenor. SP. (“Beniamino Gigli”). 1p. Large Folio. (New York), 1939. An oversize and magnificent image inscribed on the photographer’s mount to the portrait’s photographer ANGELO LAVIOSA,with my admiration and appreciation for the wonderful work.”

Considered the most famous Italian tenor after Caruso, Gigli achieved great success at New York’s Metropolitan Opera from 1920-1932, and as a guest artist there during the 1938-1939 season. He also appeared in films and concert tours. He is especially associated with the roles of Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, André Chénier in Umberto Giordano’s opera of the same name and Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème.

Laviosa was a New York portrait photographer from the 1920s to the 1960s whose career was documented in his autobiography An Era of Photography, published in 1979.

Signed with Gigli’s characteristic flourish and in fine condition. Very rare in this format.
