ELIZABETH II. (b.1926). Queen of England. SP. (“Elizabeth 1951”). 1p. Large folio. Image size: 9½” x 11½”. N.p., 1951. A beautiful black and white, head-and-shoulders formal portrait photograph, signed in white ink by the photographer Baron (Sterling Henry Nahum, 1906-1956), of a youthful Princess Elizabeth wearing several strands of pearls and looking directly into the camera. Upon her uncle’s abdication and the ascension of her father to the throne in 1936, Elizabeth became the Heiress Presumptive and received an education appropriate to her future role as Queen of the British Empire. As she grew older, she was accorded official responsibilities and, during World War II, became the only female member of the royal family to have ever actively served in the armed forces. When her father’s health prompted him to forego a planned visit to Australia and New Zealand, Elizabeth went in his stead, and it was during this journey, on February 6, 1952, that King George VI passed away leaving the throne to his daughter. On November 4, 1952, Elizabeth performed her first state opening of Parliament, with her coronation taking place a year later on June 2, 1953. Our elegant photograph was taken during Elizabeth’s last year before ascending the throne as Queen of England. Signed on the photographer’s lower blank mount and in fine condition.
