COLFAX, SCHUYLER. (1823‑1885). American statesman and vice president during Ulysses S. Grant’s administration. SP. (“Yours Truly, SchuyIer Colfax”). Carte-de-visite format. N.p., N.d. Colfax gazes somberly to his left in this distinguished, sepia-tone, head-and-shoulders portrait by Washington photographer M. J. Powers of the Whitchurst Gallery. Colfax’s involvement in establishing the new Republican Party along with his subsequent service in the U.S. House of Representatives culminated in his election as Speaker of the House, a position he held from 1863-69. His role in the Credit Mobilier scandal, one of several which rocked Grant’s administration, brought disrepute to Colfax and his party and ended his political career. Though he narrowly escaped impeachment for accepting 20 shares of stock in a company that was receiving illegally siphoned government moneys from the Union Pacific Railroad, his muddled efforts to exonerate himself could not convince the nation of his innocence, especially in light of having received a substantial dividend payment. Boldly signed and fine.
