The “Wrong” Churchill

CHURCHILL, WINSTON. (1871-1947). American author. Image Signed. (“Winston Churchill”). 1p. Folio. N.p., N.d. (Dated December, 1922 in another hand - possibly Kastor’s). Original pen-and-ink bust drawing by French artist Robert Kastor (1872-1936).

A Naval Academy graduate, Churchill edited the Army and Navy Journal before becoming managing editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine. He went on to have a successful writing career penning such works as Mr. Keegan’s Elopement (published serially in The Century Magazinein 1896), The Celebrity (1898)and best-selling novels The Crisis(1901), The Crossing (1904) and The Dwelling-Place of Light(1917). In 1899, the British statesman who shared his name became aware of the American author and wrote to him offering to sign his own works “Winston Spencer Churchill” to avoid confusion among the public; thereafter Churchill signed using his middle initial. The pair met in Boston in 1900 and maintained an occasional correspondence. Interestingly, both men were writers, amateur painters and served in the military during the same period.

Minor staining and creasing to the sheet. In excellent condition.
