Trust ye in the Lord forever - for in the Lord Jehova is everlasting strength”

Stowe based her serialized Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published in 1852, on her experiences with slaves living near her home in Ohio and in the south. The work, translated into every major language did much to raise public opinion against slavery and is often cited as a contributing factor in the American Civil War. It was the most successful book written in the 19th century, second only to the Bible in the number of copies published. There are more than 100 biblical references in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, including Isaiah. Stowe’s more popular quotation, “Trust in the Lord and do good,” is from Psalm 37.
