BOHR, NIELS. (1885-1962). Danish physicist and winner of the 1922 Nobel Prize in physics; developed the theory of atomic structure. Signed book. (“Niels Bohr”). 101pp. 8vo. N.p., N.d. A first edition of Bohr’s Atomic Physics and Human Knowledge, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1958. Inscribed to American physicist DAVID DENNISON (1900-1976)

“To David Dennison with kindest regards and in pleasant remembrances of cooperation in the old days…”

In 1916 Bohr received his appointment as a professor of theoretical physics at his alma mater, the University of Copenhagen. “Three years later, thanks to the active intervention of a group of friends who donated the ground, [the academic authorities] were at last persuaded to build Bohr a laboratory: this was the famous Institute for Theoretical Physics, of which he was director for the rest of his life,” (DSB). Bohr’s only absence from the institute came during the Nazi occupation of Denmark, when he fled to the United States and worked on the Manhattan Project – the U.S.-led effort to develop an atomic bomb. Bohr continued to refine his quantum theory of atomic structure during the ensuing decades becoming one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century.

Atomic Physics and Human Knowledge is a collection of Bohr’s essays and speeches from 1934 to 1958 that explores the intersection of atomic physics with human knowledge and culture.

Dennison first met Bohr when the latter visited the University of Michigan’s lab in 1921. The meeting convinced Dennison of the importance of traveling to Europe where he met Heisenberg, Schrödinger and Bohr and continued his studies in theoretical physics.

Inscribed in blue ink on the front free endpaper. A small, barely visible tear, affects one letter of the recipient’s name. With the original dust jacket and near fine.  Scarce.
