SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD.(1856-1950). Irish playwright and critic perhaps best known for his works The Devil’s Disciple and Pygmalion. ANS. (“GBS”). 1p. Oblong 12mo. (Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire), March 1, 1947. To Robert Browning, Jr.

“Don’t. There are too many such books – the plagues of my life. I want people to read what I have written, not what other people think I have written.”

Shaw began his career on April 21, 1894 when his Arms and the Man opened to great acclaim in London. An international success, it represented “the true beginning of [his] recognition as a popular dramatist,” (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Likened by some to Shakespeare, Shaw combined satire, comedy and social criticism in more than 50 plays, which include Saint Joan, Man and Superman and Pygmalion, the inspiration for the popular musical My Fair Lady. He also continued to write on art, literature, music, and drama – most notably for The Saturday Review, which he joined in 1895. He wrote with a wit and repartee that won him “incontestable eminence as the most effective British feuilletonist of his day… To the end, Shaw continued to publish brilliantly argued prefaces to his plays and to flood publishers with books, articles, and cantankerous letters to the editor,” (ibid.).

Shaw maintained two residences: one in London’s elegant Whitehall Court and another in the country town of Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire, conveniently located conveniently near London, and it was from his country estate that Shaw penned our note.

Written in scarlet ink on a narrow strip of paper and signed with a flourish. Folded and lightly creased and in very good condition. With the original blue-ink, hand-addressed envelope.
