VAN DER ROHE, MIES. (1886-1969). German-American architect who, as director of the Bauhaus school, pioneered modernist architecture. SP. (“Mies van der Rohe”). 1p. 4to. N.p., N.d. A Hedrich Blessingblack-and-white, silver print photograph of van der Rohe in profile signed in the lower blank margin.

Born Ludwig Mies and the son of a stone carver, Mies added a Dutch flair to his name and devoted himself to creating a modern architecture. He dispensed with ornamentation, worked in glass and concrete and earned the attention of the avant-garde with such projects as the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona and Villa Tugendhat, a reinforced concrete residence in the Czech city of Brno. In 1930, Walter Gropius selected him to direct the Bauhaus. Founded in 1919 at Weimar, this pioneering school of art and architecture emphasized the combined study of the pure arts and crafts with the goal of building a modern industrial society. After the Nazis forced the school’s closure, Mies accepted a position at Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology, designing a number of the institution’s structures. Among the most famous buildings from his 30-year career in Chicago are New York’s Seagram Building and the Farnsworth House, a modernist masterpiece in Plano, Illinois.

Hedrich Blessing Photographers is an architectural photography firm in Chicago established in 1929. With Hedrich Blessing’s blue ink stamp on the verso. Some letters of Mies’s signature are slightly feathered. Very fine and rare; the only SP of this 20th-century master we have ever handled.
